Sombrerero Loco: ¿En qué se parece un Cuervo a un Escritorio?

La célebre adivinanza propuesta por el Sombrerero Loco a Alicia del cuento Alicia en el País de las Maravillas puede torturar tu mente en busca de una respuesta. Esta pregunta nuevamente es mencionada 3 veces por Johnny Depp en la película de Tim Burton, y en el cuento se encuentra en el Capítulo 7: Una Merienda de Locos. Pero nunca nos dan una solución.

Pregunta: ¿En qué se parece un Cuervo a un Escritorio?

En inglés la pregunta original es: Why is a Raven like a writing desk?

En realidad, como el mismo autor del cuento, Lewis Carroll, confesó en el prólogo del libro escrito en 1896, él mismo no tenía una respuesta en el momento de formular la pregunta, pero la que dio allí (en el prólogo) es quizá la más ingeniosa de cuantas se han propuesto.

Lewis Carroll: Because it can produce very few notes, who they are very flat; and it is NEVAR put with the wrong end in front.

Es de locos el intentar traducir este inteligente juego de palabras al español, pero en un primer intento se podría poner:

Porque puede producir muy pocas notas, unas muy bajas; y NUNCA esta puesto con el final hacia delante.

Ojo que en inglés la palabra NEVER que significa NUNCA está escrita NEVAR, a un principio muchos pensaron que era un error de ortografía del autor, pero esta así intencionalmente, en inglés la palabra CUERVO al revés es RAVEN = NEVAR, adornando aún más la frase, puesto que en la misma se podría leer una verdad absoluta:

OVREUC está puesto con el final hacia delante.

¡¡¡ Es un encantador juego de palabras !!!

Otras respuestas

La respuesta más trascendente fue dada por Aldous Huxley, en su artículo Ravens and Writing Desks (Cuervos y Escritorios), publicado en Vanity Fair, septiembre 1928, diciendo:

Because there is a “b” in both, and because there is an “n” in neither.

Siguiendo con el intento de traducir lo intraducible, la frase sería:

Porque hay una “a” en ambos, y una “n” en ninguno.

James Michie aportó una respuesta similar:

Because each one starts with “e”.

Porque cada uno empieza con “c”.

Huxley opinó que ciertas preguntas metafísicas como: ¿Existe Dios?, ¿Tenemos libre albedrío?, ¿Por qué existe el sufrimiento? carecen tanto de significado como la pregunta del Sombrerero Loco: Problemas sin sentido, preguntas no sobre la realidad sino sobre palabras.

Sam Loyd, el famoso problemista estadounidense, dio otra solución también digna de aplauso:

Because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes.

Porque las notas por las que ambos se destacan no denotan ser notas musicales.

En 1989 la England’s Lewis Carroll Society de Inglaterra convocó un concurso para hallar nuevas respuestas. Raudales de ingenio han sido derrochados en éste y en otras aportaciones de estudiosos de Lewis Carroll y su Sombrero Loco.

A continuación listo algunas, intentando traducirlas al español.

Both have quills dipped in ink. (David B. Jodrey, Jr.): Ambos tienen plumas sumergidas en tinta.

Because it slopes with a flap. (Cyril Pearson, en su Twentieth Century Standard Puzzle Book) Porque cae batiendo las alas (o haciendo un flap, onomatopeya).

Because Poe wrote on both. Porque Poe escribió sobre ambos.

They both have legs. Ambos tienen patas.

Because they correspond! A writing desk is used to correspond. And a raven responds with a caw, a caw-response. (Israel Cohen) ¡Porque se corresponden! Un escritorio es usado para la corresponderse, y un cuervo responde con un graznido (caw), un graznido-respuesta” (caw-response, pronunciado igual que corresponse).

Because the raven has a secret aerie and the writing desk has a secretary. (Otra vez de Israel Cohen) Porque el cuervo tiene un nido (aerie) secreto y el escritorio tiene una secretaria (secretary, pronunciado igual que secret-aerie).
